WA sprinting to victory

Jesse Phillips, Monday, 15 March 2010

WA athletes making fast things happen!

A great week was had by all in attendance at the 2010 Australian Sprint Canoe Championships at Penrith, NSW.

The weather was cool but mostly sunny with clouds meandering through the edges of a picturesque scene as paddlers streaked down the Sydney Olympic race course.

The racing was undertaken on Wednesday March 10th with 1000 metre events up first, followed by 500 metre events and 200 metre events finishing off the program on Sunday March 14th.

WA had a strong team of over 30 paddlers in all ages from Under 14 to Over 45, although of all paddlers at the National Championships, one stood out:

"One of the traditional awards (is) the Raj Award for most outstanding athlete of the regatta. This year it went to Alex Graham of Ascot Kayak Club in Western Australia. Alex will take a total of 11 medals and was selected by the officials of the regatta as the most deserving of the award." - Sam Lyons, AC

Canoeing WA congratulates Alex on his great achievements at the Nationals and wishes him all the best in his future goals.

Other great performances came from the WA athletes and Canoeing WA thanks all the athletes for their commitment to the sport. Canoeing WA also thanks the many parents, volunteers, officials and coaches for their time and effort over the 2010 Sprint Season.

We eagerly await the announcement of all National and NTS Teams by Australian Canoeing.

More on the Bevan Dashwood Dash

This race is an old favourite - the upper reaches of the Canning make for a twisty-turny course with tree lined banks and much birdlife. There's a portage at Kent Street Weir. It's easy to get lost if you haven't done this course before so photocopy the street directory of the relevant pages and do a practice run. The floating (rather pretty) "weed" you see may slow you down, but it's harmless. The following paragraph comes from a February, 1999, edition of Canoe WA, the canoeing association's former magazine:
"According to a scientist at the Water and Rivers Commission it (the "weed") is a harmless floating fern called azola which helps to keep the blue-green algae at bay (competes for the nutrients). Currents and the wind cause it to collect in certain places. You can paddle through it; it's not toxic and will wash off your boat."
Who is Bevan Dashwood? He's one of that group of pioneering canoeists who started it all in Western Australia in the mid sixties. And he's still paddling! He started up Darling Range Canoe Club whose home waters are this section of the Canning River.  He has made an important contribution to canoeing, in particular, slalom, and is a life-time member of the state canoeing association.
